The experts in our chair are BACP registered Counsellor Georgina Sturmer, MBACP, and Lyz Cooper from the British Academy of Sound Therapy, who both discuss the types of sounds that can help us relax, the genres that work well for relaxation, and even some advice on if you should be singing in the bathtub.
We’ve also crunched some numbers and found some of the most popular bathtime songs from Spotify’s public playlists. Scanning almost 80,000 tracks, we’re diving into the data so you don’t have to, and we’re sure some of your favourites will feature along the way.
Collating this data alongside the help of our experts, we deem this playlist the most relaxing in the world for bathtime, and we’ll tell you why.

What do the experts say about music in the bath?
We contacted Georgina Sturmer, a Counsellor, to discuss the impact of music and relaxation while in the bath.
“There have been studies that reveal that certain sounds or genres are likely to make us relax. This includes the sounds of nature, classical music, world music, and sounds at a slower tempo.”
With this in mind, we conducted research to find songs that were relaxing and backed by science to aid relaxation with the help of Lyz Cooper, the Founder and Principal of the British Academy of Sound Therapy.
A British Academy of Sound Therapy study investigated a shortlist of musical tracks that spanned musical genres, such as classical music, pop, and ambient music. Their mission was to uncover the most relaxing song of all time.

So tell us, what is the most relaxing song of all time?
The most relaxing song found in the study was Weightless by Marconi Union.
The most relaxing song in the world: Weightless – Marconi Union
This track has been claimed to be the most calming piece of music in the world and has even been used to calm patients before going into surgery. The eight-minute track by British band Marconi Union was crafted alongside Lyz Cooper to include scientific theory for relaxation.
The band wanted to create a track that would help reduce anxiety, heart rate, and blood pressure. They achieved their outcome as the song was included in a scientific study that showed a staggering 65% reduction in stress levels by participants. So, we think it deserves a spot in your playlist for the tub! Take a listen to the song below:
Lyz Cooper on music and relaxation
As she helped to create one of the most serene songs ever to exist (with science to back it up), we thought we would ask Lyz Cooper for some more relaxation tips for the tub.
Lyz Cooper
“Music enhances all experiences in life, whether that’s our daily life or for special occasions, so there’s nothing like listening to your favourite relaxing tracks when soaking in the tub to encourage deeper relaxation or putting on some beats when having your morning energising shower. Music intensifies the experience.”
If you’re looking for specific genres or frequencies to listen to whilst relaxing in the bath, Lyz recommends ambient or classical music. “Ambient or classical are generally the best genres of music for relaxation, but anything that is slow tempo and without lyrics is beneficial for relaxation.”
Relaxing songs with lyrics for the bath
We know that sometimes a chilled sing-along or the vocals of your favourite artist can also help you unwind in the bath. While the official advice for unwinding tells us that slow-tempo music without lyrics is the most effective for relaxation, we wanted to provide you with some alternative tracks with lyrics so that you have options.
