How durable is a marble vanity unit compared to other materials used for luxury vanity units?
Marble is commonly compared to quartz and ceramic, the other two main materials used for vanity unit tops.
Quartz is non-porous and doesn’t require sealing, unlike marble. Plus, it’s engineered as opposed to natural stone, meaning it’s highly resistant to scratches and stains. However, marble’s appeal is that it’s a rare, 100% natural stone which carries a certain prestige and authentic luxury.
Ceramic sits somewhere between the two. It’s a relatively low-maintenance, affordable alternative to marble and is moisture-resistant. However, it can chip if you drop something heavy on it, leaving the surface underneath more vulnerable to staining and moisture absorption.
Marble can still be used for high-moisture environments provided it's wiped dry after use. This will prevent watermarks, preserve the finish, and extend the lifespan of your marble vanity unit.
How to maintain a Nôsa marble vanity unit?
Marble is a porous type of stone. In other words, it can absorb water and everyday liquids easily if the stone is left unsealed. That’s why it must be sealed on installation and once a year thereafter.
You can do this yourself by following these simple steps:
- Wash the surface using a pH-neutral cleaner or soapy water mixed with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth to remove all dirt, soap scum, and oils.
- Leave it to dry for at least 24 hours before applying the sealer.
- You should use a specialist solution that’s suitable for natural stone.
- Test the sealer on a small area first to ensure it doesn’t ruin its appearance.
- Pour a generous amount of your sealer onto the marble and spread it evenly across the surface. Keep the surface wet for around 15 minutes, in which time the product will penetrate the pores.
- Wipe away any excess sealer using a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Let the vanity cure for 24 hours before exposing it to water again.
We recommend cleaning your marble vanity unit at least once per week. Again, only use pH-neutral cleaning solutions — don’t use vinegar, bleach, or standard supermarket bathroom cleaning products, as they could scratch or stain the surface.
If you spill toothpaste or everyday liquids on your unit, wipe up these spills promptly to avoid the onset of stains and preserve the marble’s pattern.
