Are all mirrors suitable for bathrooms?

No, not all mirrors are suitable for bathrooms, but if your bathroom is well-ventilated, some regular mirrors can still be used. Ideally, when choosing a bathroom mirror, look for moisture-resistant options to prevent moisture-related damage from occurring. Mirrors made from tempered glass are also a safe choice as if shattered, these break into smaller, less dangerous shards than those without tempered glass.

If your bathroom is large and well-ventilated, moisture issues should be less of a concern, leaving you the option of focusing purely on choosing a mirror based on the aesthetics of your bathroom rather than practicality.

How big should a bathroom mirror be?

When choosing a bathroom mirror, a general rule of thumb is to opt for a mirror that is wider than your sink but no wider than the width of your vanity unit. It’s also worth choosing a design that allows you to see your face and upper body comfortably and that leaves ample space between the top of your sink or vanity unit and between the top of the mirror and your ceiling.

How do you hang a bathroom mirror?

Hanging a bathroom mirror is relatively simple if you have the correct tools to complete the job.

Start by deciding where you want to hang your bathroom mirror; the most popular place is above your basin or vanity unit. Then, you can start the hanging process:

Check the wall to ensure no hidden cables or pipes are behind it using a cable, pipe and stud detector. If you need a stepladder to hang the mirror, set this up now on a level surface.
Hold the mirror up to the wall (if it’s large, you may need to enlist some help with this). Use a spirit level to ensure the mirror is level, marking the position of the fixing points with a pencil.
Before drilling holes into the fixing points, lay a protective sheet over your basin or vanity unit to protect it from dust.
Take your drill bit, ensuring you have an appropriate drill bit for your wall. Mark the length of your wall plugs onto the drill bit with tape and use this as a depth gauge when drilling the holes. Ensure you have the correct wall plugs and screws compatible with your wall type and that are designed to hold the weight of your mirror. Masonry walls and walls made from bricks and mortar require a hammer-action drill with a masonry bit, whereas plasterboard walls need hollow wall fixings to secure the mirror safely.
Put on safety goggles, and drill holes in the marked positions to your drill bit’s marked depth. Clear up dust with a dustpan and brush, then take a hammer and gently tap the wall plugs in with a hammer, ensuring they’re flush to the wall.
Attach your mirror’s fixings to the wall before hanging the mirror.
Give your new mirror a wipe with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints and dust.
